    Painting the Light

Painting The Light is a detailed and fascinating look at a period of history in Australia. The time frame covered is from just before WW11 with the setting around the pastoral regions of Western New South Wales. The characters have been brought to life by the fact that they are based on the author’s own parents, and their passions and intent are authentic. The detail is so rich that it is evocative, and the older reader can relate to many of the social customs.

In essence this is a romance, but the lives of Nell and Alec are far from straightforward. Having been separated by the war they eventually get together on a property which Alec is buying. They begin to settle down, but Alec has been awakened to the prospect of different possibilities after having fought overseas, and met with many different people.

The new ideas and ways of living have made a deep impression on the young farmer, and he is encouraged to voice his ideas. Eventually he is heard at the highest levels and asked to stand for Parliament.

Nell’s story is one that also encapsulates the role of women at the time. Her plight along with the intolerable treatment of the local Aboriginal people, shows how class distinction and the sense of entitlement has changed in Australia. The politics and the power games of the times were questionable.

This is an interesting story on many levels. It is a great look at the history of the times and that region and the new ways of thinking after the war which caused disharmony to the conservative folk. The love story is very beguiling.

    PLANTS OF POWER

CULTIVATE YOUR GARDEN APOTHECARY AND TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE

For everyone who has a garden, and enjoys time spent in it, this book will become a trusty friend for many years. Both Stacy Demarco and Miranda Mueller passionately believe that our ancestors had a binding relationship with plants. They nourished us until we died, then we nourished them. Science has confirmed what many ancient tribes understood and used in the plant world.

Both these women worked in the corporate world but found something missing in their lives. Stacy is a Witch and is in service to the Community. Miranda escaped from her high heels and began her journey by studying Permaculture.

So, you’re not a gardener. It doesn’t matter. You need the desire (as Prince Charles has), to value your plants and listen to what they may say. This requires patience, and in the beginning, careful planning. Any small patch of land is able to produce plants, which will in turn attract bees and other insects. Slowly, you can build up a healthy community by nurturing and caring for the plant life.

The practical and easy steps which are mentioned here, make sense. Firstly, with your plot of land, you need to identify each little micro- climate.  The gardener can then gradually build a picture of the area for those plants that will thrive where the sun shines longest, where the wind is constant, or where the soil is sheltered from the rain.

There are many tips on composting and care of soil. But by far the largest portion of Plants of Power is taken up by individual plants. There is a full-page illustration of a plant (ginger), then other names are given for it. The properties of that plant are given, and its healing benefits discussed. This is followed by ideas the authors have for utilising this product. Here we see a recipe for “Kick -Arse Candied Ginger,” a delicious way to use this plant.

The photographs and information mean Plants of Power will find a lasting place in the homes of those who spend their lives caring for our soils and relating to plants.

  • The Power to Change

    The Power to Change

How to Harness Change to Make it Work for You

Socrates, Buddha and Disraeli all alliterated on change at great length, or not so great length, during their lifetimes as they too struggled with the world about them changing. None of them could have envisioned the change that has taken over the world over the past eighteen months, when a virus was hatched in a market in Wuhan, China; a virus that has proven to be highly infectious and one against which  humans have no defence.

This virus changed the world overnight in as dramatic a manner as possible, with everything once considered as normal being deconstructed before the eyes of the world’s population. Trust was eroded,   a pandemic was declared and the governments of the world struggled to understand and manage with this new and very real threat.

In The Power To Change Campbell Macpherson has presented a comprehensive guide to understanding change and the fact of the matter, that while change a can be brutal, change comes with choices;  although there are times when everyone feels powerless against change, the reality is everyone has a choice as to how they react to change.

As he says a number of times throughout the book, he has not always been a successful person; he has faced change many times, wallowed in self-pity many times, started again many times and is realistic enough to understand, that this will keep on being a component of his life for a long time to come, as it will with most people.

Change is a natural part of life, but generally change arrives slowly and can often be dealt with step by step. But in 2020 change arrived with the force of a crash landing, not allowing people to slowly embrace a dramatically different style of living.

So, how best to learn to shape, restructure and rebuild life as it is now and on-going, whether you are the everyday man, a captain of industry, a small business owner, or a young person trying to find a way to make sense of the very different future they are facing.

Reading The Power to Change is the first step, the second step is following the very practical, tried and true advice, the third step is to embrace the change, look outside the square, find the new opportunities that are offering, which are there and will continue to be so, and embrace the reality.

As Macpherson says over and over again throughout the chapters, change is there to be embraced, not feared. Understanding the reason behind the fear, the personal barriers we all erect against change, and understanding that we all have a choice as to how we move on, face the fear, develop the natural optimism that is there within us all, will and does make a very big difference.

The Power To Change is a book that makes a huge amount of sense in today’s world. It is a book that will resonate, is powerful. It is book that will definitely make a difference in your world no matter who you are or where you live or what you do for a living.

Macpherson is saying it is OK to feel out of your depth, emotional and distressed facing a different future. He is offering the tools to help you move forward, to the acceptance of a world that is different, but one that is also full of opportunity.

A lovely quote from Charles Darwin, a man who embraced and understood change, has been placed at the end of the book, which sums up in entirety the message being offered throughout The Power To Change.

‘It is not the strongest of species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.’

  • Low Tox Life A handbook for a healthy you and a happy planet

Low Tox Life A handbook for a healthy you and a happy planet

Alexx Stuart and this book are guaranteed to become your very new best friends. Why, you may well ask? Because it is filled with the most down to earth information about making a difference, not just to the way you live your life, but to the environment and to people empowerment. You are being encouraged to make critical choices about making change, and by doing so making a serious and long term difference.

In today’s world of microscopic examination of just about everything, the constant barrage of what is and is not good for you, the environment, genetic modification, allergies, illness and so very much more, become one huge, confusing blur. For anyone who is trying to use the right products, trying to make a difference, is concerned about what they are eating or feeding their families, somewhere along the way it all becomes too hard, because what they are trying to achieve is a bar set far too high, in a world that strives for perfection.

Stuart sets out from the beginning to debunk the myth that you as single entity, cannot make a difference to your body, to your home, what you eat and most importantly to your mental health.  The reality is, you can make a huge difference by having an honest look at what you are buying, eating and wasting.

As with many changes in life, it took a health crisis to make Stuart take a look at what she was putting on her skin, eating and purchasing, as well as the personal and financial cost of ill health. Her Ah Ha moment arrived when she took a serious look at what was in so many of the products she was purchasing and realised she was poisoning her system with the host of unexplainable chemicals listed on the packets and containers.

Now at the forefront of the Low Tox movement she offers basic, down to earth advice on how to make the changes required and often desired; not in one massive rebirth but by slow and easily managed steps towards a cleaner healthier you, and by association, eventually a cleaner, healthier environment.

One of the most important points reiterated throughout the book is, take it one step at a time and by doing so success will be achievable. As she says, nothing is perfect and therefor, keeping the changes real is the secret to success. Start by replacing one product and move on. Make the big changes slowly and reap the rewards.

As a handbook to change there are chapters devoted to skin care, the natural and healthy way to go about looking after your skin, with suggestions and recipes to try out for scrubs, moisturisers. Remember there are great alternatives to the chemical products now in use for just about everything. Food, cookware and linen, all come under scrutiny with a host of wonderful suggestions, recipes and ideas that can and will make a difference.

‘Greenwashing’ comes under the microscope as well. In other words don’t believe everything listed on the labels, check it out for yourself. But most importantly, you can make a difference by making choices as to what you purchase. If the product is not low tox, environmentally friendly and produced ethically, simply choose one that is, as eventually the manufacturer will get the message via their bottom line.

The final chapter and perhaps the most significant is Low Tox Mind looking at the simple pleasures of life such as connectedness, happiness, rest, relaxation, meditation and the joy of having made beneficial changes to your lifestyle.  A word of warning is issued in the five ways not to lose your friends as you try to convince them to make healthy changes in their life, without turning into a social pariah.

As she strongly suggests, approach the changes with a sense of excitement, knowing that by making simple changes you are not only enhancing your life, but also helping to make the future a far better place for generations to come.

YOU have the POWER to make serious and sustainable change; YOU are being encouraged to use it!

  • The Unstoppable Woman of Purpose: A Woman’s Guide to Conquer Life and Business with Confidence and Certainty (Unstoppable Woman of Purpose Global Movement)

The Unstoppable Woman of Purpose: A Woman’s Guide to Conquer Life and Business with Confidence and Certainty (Unstoppable Woman of Purpose Global Movement)

CeeCee Clarke is a woman who has inspired others to rise to the top, to rise above adversity and to believe in the power of being a woman. She also asks what it would be like to be considered as Unstoppable. What could be done as an Unstoppable woman to achieve, instigate, change and create; to make a positive change on not just a personal level, but also on a global perspective?

A big ask and an even bigger challenge to accept, but in this anthology, twenty-two women, all leaders in their field, who have at some point accepted the challenge of becoming an Unstoppable woman, often overcoming huge and cataclysmic events, to accept change and achievement in their lives, in order to make a difference, show and demonstrate that with passion and belief in yourself, you can and will make a serious difference.

In all of the testimonies, because this is what they are, there is a common thread, that of a passion for what they do, the work they have chosen and the people about them who have helped and encouraged them to be able to become what they are ; Unstoppable women.

A number of the stories are deeply steeped in religion, almost to the point of camouflaging the vison and purpose that has been the catalyst for change in these women, but in many others, there is a belief in something other than themselves, some divine help and inspiration when the going became really tough, that has given them the strength and courage to overcome huge odds to in order to succeed and become successful in their chosen fields.

Described as an anthology for the visionary women who wants to succeed, the stories will be inspirational, will offer a pathway through what can often seem like insurmountable hurdles and challenges, and by understanding another’s pathway to the top, will support and show guidance to many women wanting to break out, to begin the same or similar journeys.

As the pages turn and the stories from truly inspirational women unfold, you are encouraged to embrace your femininity and grace, discover your soul journey, value your worth and discover and learn to re-charge your inner power.

To help you begin your journey, or consolidate your assets and purpose, there are a series of workbooks at the end of the book, coupled with a small biography of each of the women presenting in the anthology.

For the woman who sees no limitations, or the woman who is wondering whether to jump in and see what can be achieved, there is something amongst the pages and the stories, which will reach out, encourage, inspire and lead on to becoming an Unstoppable woman; a woman of power, a woman out to make a difference and finally bust the ‘glass ceiling’ into very small pieces.
