The Awesome Physics in Your City

The Amazing Theatre of Physics is an educational and entertaining group who travel around the world to show children how much fun physics can be. They have written The Awesome Physics in your City as an educational tool. The large picture book begins by showing an outline of a town. Each area, from a construction site to the shops, and the playground are numbered. As you move through the pages, each section is dealt with individually.

The Street is the first section we look at. The illustration shows a road with a tram, cars and workmen. Underground sections of the road are examined, and the rainbow on the road from spilled oil is discussed. Safety on the road, speed and mirrors are also pictured and detailed.

On the construction site the concept of push and pull, using a crank and cogwheels are demonstrated.

So many interesting details are given that going to a restaurant will never be the same. Drinking through a straw, bubbles in drinks and hot and cold liquids are mentioned and explained. At the Doctor’s, in the pool, and in the shop, items are isolated and explained.

There is a Glossary in the back of this informative book. Terms such as electricity, buoyancy, flow, forces, light, and radiation are explained. Because of the Picture Book format the subject is easily accessible to young children and accompanied by many illustrations.

  • Cosmic Bullsh*t: A Guide to the Galaxy’s Worst Life Hacks

Cosmic Bullsh*t: A Guide to the Galaxy’s Worst Life Hacks

In this very quirky take on all things cosmic, Chris Ferrie peels back the many layers of mystique that has built over many years relating to such things as the cosmos, Martians, little green men and even the sacred art of astrology.

In Cosmic Bullsh*t he uses wit and knowledge, because amongst many other things, he is a Physicist and lectures on Quantum Physics as well as a very popular author of children’s books, which make him well qualified to debunk all the wonders of the universe that perhaps, are not wonders at all, just figments of people’s imagination.

If you are someone who is emotionally attached to all of the body/mind/soul beliefs, love little green men and delight in being amazed by the many incomprehensible things in life, this is not for you but if you enjoy a fact based romp through science, really want to know what is behind so many of life’s so called mysteries, get settled in for a most enjoyable voyage into Cosmic Bullsh*t.

  • Quantum Bullsh*t: How to Ruin Your Life with Advice from Quantum Physics

Quantum Bullsh*t: How to Ruin Your Life with Advice from Quantum Physics

You can tell by the title Quantum Bullsh.t that this book is a rather confronting and passionate explanation of how quantum physics is used incorrectly to sell products. It is also very liberally sprinkled with swearing and humour. Getting familiarized with that is a task, however, the author says that if you spend a few hours reading this book you will gain enough quantum knowledge to be aware of the “bullsh.t sprouted about it.”

Firstly, we are told that Quantum Physics is “The most accurate scientific theory ever invented.” It lets us build atom by atom things that don’t happen anywhere else in the universe. It can also help us understand what stars are made of. If something is advertised as quantum…..love, quantum…. healing, or ANYTHING except physics, it is most likely to be incorrect.

The explanations then become quite technical, but they are softened by the humour. When talking about energy, Chris reminds us that Radiation treatment kills cancer cells and that IS quantum energy. “Quantum energy is the fuel that powers all microscopic processes. It’s always there. So if you want to build things on a microscopic scale- like a tiny electronic chip for example-you definitely need to worry about quantum energy.”

The main aim of the author is to educate us about quantum physics and make sure that we are aware of the ways this scientific term can be used incorrectly. He covers areas which lend themselves to be used by tricksters. If you have an interest in Science this is certainly worth reading.
