Holly Jones: a series of singles

Holly Jones created a series of telling songs during the course of 2020, individual, emotional and delicate performed on her piano. All are reflective of so much felt and endured by so many over the past year.

By day Holly Jones is a physical therapist using the magic of music as one of her healing modalities, after hours she is an accomplished, pianist composer who believes that through the medium of music peace and healing can be found.

Sink into the sumptuous solo piano single I Remember (2020) from Holly Jones as she leads gently into the stillness from which to flow effortlessly across the spectrum of emotions, creating a gentle space in time that is to be treasured, enjoyed, supped from with delight, revelled in, allowed to settle and sooth as a balm for the very troubled souls we have all become over the past year

Fortitude (2020) is short, charming, and delicate; it speaks to the very heart of people everywhere who have needed great fortitude to ride out the storm that was 2020, a year that was filled with with a sense of  deep sadness, change and devastation not easily forgotten.

I Wonder as I Wander is another in a series of singles created in 2020 that describe the emotion of the moment, an emotion felt by all, as whenever possible we wandered, whether in our minds from our solitude in lockdown, or in person to the real pleasure of the great outdoors, wondering what the future held, how much longer or worse could things become, how much more the spirit could tolerate, when there would be an end to the sadness.

Cloud Drift (2020) is just that: imagine lying on the ground watching the clouds drift by on their journey to some other stratosphere, seemingly without a care or worry in their universe; a blue sky filled with white fluff, gentle and yet full of hidden shapes offering mindless captivation. A delicate, light single perfect for the moment in time when stepping out of daily toil is required.

Heart To Heart (2021) is a reflective piece that is very easy to be able to relate too, as it is full of the many thoughts and feelings we all have to face and accept as we take stock, relax and understand that such is life;  as in the beginning so to in the end. A slight hint of sadness threads through the piece as each of the notes slowly shape a letting go, an acceptance, a completion.

Learning to Fly (2021) is a refreshing, solo piano piece filled with happiness and hope, as the very elements of stretching out to embrace the new day are perfectly captured as Holly Jones sits at her piano allowing the music to emerge, to bring forth almost a yearning to be able to learn to fly once again in a fresher, clearer, more beautiful future.

Each of the pieces were written and recorded at various times over 2020 reflecting the emotions of a year truly like no other in modern times. The two pieces released in 2021, just two months in, are reflective of acceptance, letting go and fresh new beginning; a time of hope in the future with an eventual return to a more settled, peaceful world.

Each of the tracks is perfect to add as a single to a playlist or gather together to make a gorgeous, mellow and soothing palate to be enjoyed.

  • Waltz of Life

    Waltz of Life

Pianist composer Sydney Stevens has captured something very special in her work Waltz of Life made up of tracks created over many years, each piece composed in relation to life events which inspired the need to be written as a tribute and a memory to this event. She has dedicated this work to World Peace in the hope that each and every one can find peace in their own heart, which will ultimately lead to World Peace.

The opening track and album title Waltz of Life was composed in 2016 as she was reflecting on the fragility of life, how fleeting it a can be and the need to end each day with grace. Joined by Keiko Araki on violin and Pansy Chang on Cello, the work is sweeping, with a richness that is all enveloping.

A lovely piece of bits and pieces is Gatherings and, as gatherings in general terms are composed of many diverse peoples, so too is this piece created from diversity, each instrument joining together with the common thread of piano to ‘gather’  with  the intent to live the in moment, enjoy the ability to create joy and happiness through music.

Your New Wings, a piece of note, was created after the passing of her mother, the inspiration coming to her as she was driving through the Columbia River Gorge; the vison of her Mothers strong spirit soaring with new wings, free in the purity of a new dimension. Once again she is joined by Aranki and Chang as they segue gently through the emotions to capture the purity of the joy, sadness and freedom of a spirit soaring, swooping and delighting in splendid innocence.

The final and fitting piece is Waltz of Life Reprise to complete the circle created as the very essence of love, hope, joy and acceptance come together to form a beginning and an end: a refuge, if only for hour to simply take time to take time, to live in the moment, to be remind that life is fleeting and therefore should be lived with grace and kindness.

Waltz of Life is an absolutely charming collection of contemporary music which will both appeal and delight.

  • Within

    Within

Slipping slowly and gently into peace is the first second and third thought and emotion captured with this gentle, sublime and elegant album Within from Michelle Qureshi, as she sits with her guitar and plays piece after beautiful piece, each sliding effortlessly into one another to create an almost continuous and meditative thread, undemanding and yet softly sensuous.

Twenty Four tracks, none overly long, make up within, which while the music appears to be effortless, allows the true skill of the performer to be enjoyed and appreciated for the shape and form of the composition. Without any distracting or added influences the music is as it has been conceived, clear and precise in delivery, soft and gentle in emotion.

In a year of discordant elements, it is delightful to be able to escape if only for a small moment in time to a world that is gentle, flowing, soft in hue and colour, as the guitar is encouraged to deliver, in perfect voice, the gift of tranquillity.

Very easy to imagine is Michelle Qureshi and her guitar simply sitting by the side of stream or gently flowing river, maybe under the canopy of trees, perhaps deep in a glade dappled with sunlight, allowing inspiration to arrive through her fingers, carefully selecting the notes to be played, constructing pieces as they are offered to her; going within to that special place where divine inspiration is to be discovered.

To dream and to go within; this is the true purpose of the music. Enchanting, unsophisticated, filled with light and joy, allowing a succession of images to be created and enjoyed, Within captures to perfection a woman at one with her music, guitar and person seamlessly melded into one special moment in time, seeking and creating ‘chicken soup for the soul’: something which is so desperately needed as we move into the closing tumultuous days of 2020.

  • Ordinary Matter

    Ordinary Matter

Since Marie Curie won the first of her Nobel Prizes in 1903, nineteen other such prizes have been awarded to women. Australian author Laura Elvery has research each of these remarkable women and she has written an anthology of short stories, tightly or more loosely, linked to each one of these women.

The collection of twenty short stories in ‘Ordinary Matter’ are set in such diverse places as the Grand Canyon, Stockholm, Queensland, and Paris and vary in genre; historical, futuristic, scientific, but they hang together with the common bond that each features a female winner of the Nobel Prize for Science.

Every story is prefaced with the year, name of the woman who won and the achievement which was acknowledged with the Nobel Prize, giving the reader an opportunity to make the connection between the prize winner and the story. This link at times is quite obscure or abstract; however, by using the Author’s Notes at the end of the book, this link usually becomes much clearer.

Readers who are fans of short stories will doubtlessly enjoy this collection and appreciate the way in which the author has cleverly intertwined fact with fiction. Others after consulting the Author’s Notes will find themselves wanting to learn more about these exceptional women; the obstacles they had to overcome, and the sacrifices they made.

  • Healing Sound Project 1:1

    Healing Sound Project 1:1

Sarah Jane Hargis believes in following dreams and overcoming obstacles, and doing what it takes to be able to follow a pathway in life that could be considered as a pre-defined destiny, that of becoming a world class flutist and Neurological Music Therapist.

Born into a family of farmers, her love of music was encouraged by her grandmother, who played piano and her father a cornet player and guitarist, little did she realise as a child, she would go on to make music her life. When she began to partially lose her hearing, she moved away from music for some time, eventually returning to her passion through the study of Neurological Music Therapy.

There she met Andrea Cortez whose intention it was to learn the harp, to incorporate the healing vibration with the framework of Healing music. Hargis, a composer as well as instrumentalist over several genres, always had a desire to compose and record with a harpist.

After a session where they combined harp and flute melodies a decision was made to collaborate, to create the beautiful relaxing and healing Healing Sound Project 1:1 for practitioners working within the range of healing arts.

Overall, the work has immense charm, encompassing a range of elegant and comfortable melodies, which will have a wide appeal and will undoubtedly find a permanency within the healing modalities. But this collaboration has a far wider appeal, as it sits very nicely within the relaxation, meditation and healing fields, encompassing New Age, but not being defined within the structures, which will appeal to the wider community.

Perfect for background music, the subliminal elements craft a sense of well-being and peace, offering a sense of calm making this combination of harp and flute with electronic influences, a wonderful choice to help with overcoming much of the distress now prevalent in in a rapidly changing world.

  • Transcendence

    Transcendence

Hauntingly beautiful, this solo flute album from Sherry Finzer is simply put, a journey that is timeless, absorbing and infinitely soothing. Recorded at The Tank in Colorado, the single voice of the flute is transformed into a melodic and ethereal language of absolute peace and tranquillity.

Transcendence moves beyond the everyday world of ‘new age’ music to create a sea of tranquillity with an otherworldly ambiance; pure, simple which because of this simplicity, has an aura of delicacy that moves well beyond the physical plane.

The Tank is a venue much coveted by musicians for the unique reverberation created as notes are formed, a reverberation that allows the note to be drawn out, to linger, offering a unique sound unable to be created or formed in any other manner.

A rare addition to the music formed within The Tank is the sound of nature, the breath of the musician, the sound of the keys being depressed which are all captured in the recording process, adding to the absolute charm of the music.

Finzer has harnessed these distinct characteristics to create an album woven with a delicate touch, an improve collection which is dreamy, relaxing and inspirational.

Originally constructed as a water tank for the Steam Trains in 1940 but never used as such, The Tank was moved to Rangely, Colorado, in the 1960’s, where it was once again never used, as the location proved unsuitable for the weight of the tank, once filled with water.

Abandoned, it became the haunt of locals who were familiar with the wonderful acoustics. A group of musicians heading home stopped off at The Tank, realising the potential of the acoustics. They eventually purchased it and in doing so created a unique recording studio which was carefully kept secret for some years. Now invited musicians can use the wonderful venue to create some of the most unique music recorded with instruments, rather than electronically.

Sherry Finzer hopes this gloriously peaceful collection brings with it a sense hope, peace and tranquillity, which I can say after listening to this work a number of times, it certainly does, offering a moment of peace, Transcendence, in a world so recently very changed.

  • Peace in This Land

    Peace in This Land

Dainty and delicate, this gentle work from Bob Yonker, Peace In This Land is certainly a very timely release, all-be-it that it was released in December 2019, at a time when the world was gearing up for another Christmas, completely innocent of what was going to be contained in the few opening months of the New Year of 2020; a year that held fresh hope for many and in many ways still will.

Yonker is well known for composing music that bathes the very soul in calm, peaceful music, music he considers is sent to him through Spirit, to settle and calm the distress created by life in the everyday world; never has this style of music been more needed.

Solo piano played in his own compositions offers a time to be taken to simply be, to go within, to relax and enjoy the contemplation we are all called to undertake from time to time. The track titles are an excellent way of selecting random pieces should this be the way of choice beginning with Morning Meditation, a measured piece full of freshness, a prayer of thanks with which to begin a fresh new day.

Slow and melodic the beautiful Whisper of the Wind offers a journey to a special place, a place of light, relaxation and renewal, whereas Golden returns the journeyman into the realms of everyday in a gentle and soothing style, until the slightly upbeat tempo arrives to energise the spirit back to reality once again.

Skipping across the keyboard Circle of Light is filled with joy, offering a sense that fresh beginnings will be achievable, that anything is possible. Sun and Moon is a really divine track that simply is; the title says it all.

Peace in this Land is the title of the nine track album, as well as the final offering which, after the dancing Sun and Moon is a sombre, reflective piece once again, that offers comfort for challenging times, but also contains a delightful thread of lightness, making this the perfect piece to draw to conclusion a little over thirty minutes of meditation or reflection, or as previously noted, simply used as a stand-alone piece for a quiet moment of relaxation.

  • Asilomar

    Asilomar

There is a strong similarity between the beauty of music created in Sedona, a place of great natural beauty and spirituality, and music inspired by the oceans of the world, both containing mystery, magic, a rare and often changing beauty and immense haling.

Michael Martinez has captured this sense of healing and beauty in his gentle and reflective album Asilomar, from the Spanish Asilo al mar which means refuge by the sea, a place he found refuge, peace and inspiration, of which was later recorded in Sedona. A perfect combination of nature and melody.

My Guru begins the work, perhaps written in homage to the ever changing, always grounding abilities of the ocean which provided the inspiration required for this delicate album.

One of the two very personal pieces Asilomar, forms as slightly hesitant, almost tentative, before becoming more confident, stronger, more definite in the knowledge that shapes and forms are being created; that there is joy in the moment, joy in the creation and joy in the completion of the beautiful sequence of notes that make up a very special moment in time.

Soft and gentle Sedona Whisper quietly evolves, filling the ether with the very essence of the mystique and majesty that is Sedona; a quiet reflection, a moment to relax, to consider and to enjoy.

Tender Love creates a perfect moment of quietude, of stillness and calm in a maddening world, a calm that heals and refreshes as well as draws to a close, a beautiful period of time where the imagination can drift freely, to walking along a desolate beach in perfect harmony with the elements, the deep endless secrets of the ancient desert, the perfection there to be capture for a single minute in time.

Magical, relaxing and full of serenity, Asilomar is the perfect album to play when there is a need to step back, to take a minute and simply just be.

  • Sound Currents

    Sound Currents

Close your eyes and let the body and mind sink into neutral, allowing the beautiful waves of ambient sound to wash over you commencing a journey of peace and healing, courtesy of the immensely talented Tom Moore and Sherry Finzer, as they have once again combined their talents to create Sound Currents, the perfect medium to connect to the very essence of your being.

Tom Moore has spent many years creating and performing music that he considers is ‘intimately interwoven with his path as an explorer of consciousness’, music that is transcendent, music which inspires and creates an awareness of an inner spiritual presence.

Classically trained flautist Sherry Finzer has moved across many genres with her music to find a special niche in the New Aged and ambient chamber music genre, where she works with a vast range of artists in varying styles. Her instruments of choice, low flutes, are used on Sound Currents to add a certain mystique to the collaborative pieces that enhance the deep meditative qualities of the songs.

Sound Currents consists of nine pieces of ‘Space Music’ working within the healing modalities of sound waves to encourage a deep cleaning to wash the spirit free of hurt, to begin the healing process in a beautiful and pain free manner.

Each of the pieces created with the subtle and intricate use of electronica, combined with the hauntingly low range of the flute are simply divine, perfect, achieving the desire to create a ‘hypnotic and peaceful listening experience’.

Ambient spiritual music is difficult to describe in words as it is all about feeling, immersion, relation and connection, therefor the highest accolade to be awarded in words for this blissful, spiritual journey is absolutely transcendental.

  • Quiet Spaces: Flute Meditations For Mindfulness and Relaxation

Quiet Spaces: Flute Meditations For Mindfulness and Relaxation

The hauntingly sensual sound of the flute drifts in what would seem to be an effortless flow, wafting across the sounds of the mundane, offering a gentle and relaxing voyage into peace and tranquillity, creating the trademark of this latest release from world renown flautist Ann Licater, in her fifth solo album Quiet Spaces.

Licater has selected a range of soothing songs to delight the heart and soul, and when played in her award-winning style on a selection of flutes, creates a seamless, 45-minute journey to take the listener anywhere they choose to follow.

Subtle, haunting, mysterious notes float ever outward weaving a delightful soundscape that enchants, while encouraging meditation, mindfulness and well-being, beginning with the title track Quiet Spaces, a relaxing and soothing song to begin a true soul journey.

Whist none of the pieces are overly long a distinct calmness descends on the space, bringing with it a rather unique vibration, very easy to tune into and enjoy for the time available.

Ann Licater’s skill with the selection of flutes chosen to be used is very, very impressive. The range of instruments used for Quiet Spaces include a Mayan Temple flute replica to a Tennessee Butternut Native American flute, which takes her back to her first release Following the Call, more than ten years ago.

Although the work is pure flute, with the very occasional addition of delicate wordless vocals and Peter Phippen on electric bass, the songs are not repetitious as the choice of instrument on each piece allows it to develop its own unique identity, while maintaining the original intent, to create a sonic journey of relaxation.

Ideally suited for areas such as spas, meditation, yoga and mindfulness requirements, the work is also the perfect medium to encourage a good night’s sleep, sooth the restless child and settle the reluctant sleeper into a deep, healing and refreshing sleep.

Gentle, beautiful and absolutely perfect for taking a little time out in today’s manic lifestyle.
