    Write Your Own Funny Stories

A laugh-out-loud book for budding writers

First off, all budding young writers need to grab a copy of Write Your Own Funny Stories, read it from cover to cover, then go back to the beginning and begin your very own personal writers course with James Campbell.

Known for his ability to write really fantastic stories for a wide range of young readers, James Campbell has decided to share his vast knowledge, gained over many years, on how to write a story that is really, really funny and really, really good.

His mate Rob Jones, who also knows a thing or two about illustrating really funny stories, adds his bit to the ’workshop’ to show how a strategically placed picture can make all the difference.

As he says from page 1, this is not an ordinary book and if it is an ordinary book you are looking for, this is definitely not it. Why? Because this book lets you into a secret about authors and people who write stuff and the reason why they are perhaps the very same person.

If you are someone who fills notebooks with ‘stuff’, sometime funny, sometimes just some thoughts or words, or who likes writing those essays your teacher ‘forces’ you to write, perhaps you could consider yourself an author, because really, according to James Campbell there is little or no difference, as it is words on paper that make a story, regardless of how long to short the story lasts.

Pages turn quickly, worksheets have been included to help you sort out your thoughts, look at that thing called inspiration, going to the next step, planning your characters, plotting the story line and then the crunch question, to use the computer or to write it out by hand. Hmm, serious decision time and James Campbell explains the pros and cons of making the right decision at this time.

By the last page, on which there is a surprise, you will not only have written your own story, but will have also read though the book a second or may be third time and will know for sure something many people, children and adults never, ever get to really know, or understand, how to Write Your Own Funny Stories.

Super well done, You!!!! And of course, you have added your own funny cartoons to help illustrate the story just as Rob Jones has done in this very funny book!

  • Something I Said

    Something I Said

Something I Said is a wonderful heartwarming story of life as a nerd; Car to his friends is a kid who really lives in what he considers is a perfectly normal universe, but really is a world of his own and his love of English literature, yep, English Lit! He also sees so many things in life as funny and really can’t understand why no one else thinks the same way.

Carmichael Taylor is thirteen years old, and in his own quirky way, trying to find out where he fits best in life. He hates geography but loves English Lit, enjoys being ‘witty’ even when he knows better and has a lot of fun at his and his families expense, as he uses them in his stories and also to try and sort out his place in family!

It’s his love of being ‘witty’ that finally lands him in some serious stuff, err trouble, having to take on the role of stand-up comedian in the school talent show, something he is more than delighted to do. His moment of fame, you know that one that is going to let the world realise how funny he is, turns to something far more than that, something he never, ever thought would happen when he set out to discover fame, but instead found infamy, embarrassment and well…….stuff!

Funny, honest, extremely witty and perfectly capturing the antics of the sometimes not so grown-up thirteen-year-old Carmichael Taylor, the epitome of many a young teen as they discover life’s boundaries and how far they can stretch with often unexpected and sometime funny results.

Something I Said from Ben Bailey Smith is the absolutely perfect read for teens as it presents in a very funny, heartfelt style the angst that can happen and the lessons to be learned as the pathway travelled does not always turn out to be as straightforward as it first seemed. Especially when you are Carmichael Taylor!

2028 … and Australia has gone to hell in a handbasket

The author has taken us into the near future with this novel. We examine Australia and other world countries in their move to prepare for the future. Some of the “Not very good ideas of today have become ten years worse.”  This is the first novel by Ken, and his humour and insightful ideas keep us laughing and nodding at the same time. So many things are an almost logical progression. For example, the “Parkies,” actual pokies but used to purchase a parking ticket with the added bonus of having a spin which could earn you some money!

The Prime Minister of Australia had a policy of surrounding himself with “Lifers,” those politicians who know how to keep their head down and be seen just enough to stay in the job. He actually thought they were a bunch of dullards, but he had dispatched all of the fiery opposition and was now in a fine position to call a snap election. The Greens were in receivership because they had denounced a chemical, and had been sued by the American owners. Just when the PM decided to announce his Election date, the Luddites organized a nude demonstration. Someone has been leaking times and dates….

An initiative looked at was the automating of some medical positions in Medicare. The Automated General Practitioners could be used by any Medicare card holder by using a computer or the latest phone. The patient would describe to the doctor what the symptoms were and answer questions that the doctor posed. A spotty child could be held up in front of a web cam in the early hours of the morning, and the doctor could say if it needed hospital or bedrest. A variety of doctors were available.

Taxation has always been a tricky subject to discuss before an election. It is complicated and there always seems to be someone who misses out. However, a bright spark in the Government came up with the idea that for every $100 you pay in taxation the subscriber would earn a Tax Lotto ticket. Each week the Tax Office would draw one ticket and the winner would receive a million dollars. Hopefully this would discourage people from claiming all their tax concessions…….

Political reform to eradicate cronyism, and the power held by the managerial class, mining magnates, casino owners and bureaucrats, had been addressed by a young Russian woman. She had outsmarted all the top political minds, and cleverly endeared herself to the public. Her party are tipped to win the election campaign and a new beginning for Australian Politics will begin!

This is clever and an amusing look at the thoughts and progression of directions that is taken by politicians and their staff.

  • Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies

    Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies

In this laugh out loud look at life thought the eyes on one of Australia’s much love comediennes, Kitty Flanagan, we are introduced to a slice of life that has come about by simply being the person she was born to be, someone who loves to see the funny, idiotic and outrageous aspects that do go to make up everyone’s life; though perhaps not in such a colourful a manner as Flanagan’s.

A self-confessed lover of attention from a young age, actually a very young age, she was born to be someone who would perform on the a stage, but as she says, she was late coming into the comedy scene, because she was still trying to discover where she really did fit in the world and what she wanted to do with her life.

Abortive attempts at university, teaching, copywriting and crayfish processing, where she finally found herself in the cold room until she agreed to stop talking, saw her reviewing her ambitions. Several failed love affairs also called for a bit of revision.

Having travelled widely as a result of her latest reincarnation she finally found a small niche in the world of stand-up comedy, as comedian in training, which saw her performing in Singapore at the entry point to a very popular karaoke bar upstairs. As with many of the events in her life, this also came to a colourful finale as she was deleted!

Flanagan tells many tales about her life experiences leaving many of the sacred cows of the world out in the open for further exploration. Internet dating for older women, doing drugs, and what happens when you get it totally wrong, trying to find the right man in your life, and getting egged to name just a few.

Hitchhiking was something that was common way back when the world was a safer place, but as she discovered it was more by good luck and the intervention of a very sensible older woman, that she did not take the first lift offered by a car load of dubious young men heading north, but the one organised by her good Samaritan with a well-respected truck driver! She lived to tell the tale.

Part Three is a revelation as there is a miscellany of fascinating facts mixed up in The Grave Diggers Wife and other bits and bobs considered as the flotsam of a life well lived and enjoyed. Particular attention should be paid to the tale titled I love a bidet, for all of us who have often times marvelled at this wonderful appliance and then used the standard model!

As all good comediennes do, she uses the art of everyday living to build a solid platform from which to entertain, often wonders why someone who lacks self-confidence, by her own admission, but is confident on stage has been so successful and has finally after years of analysis decided that it is no big deal really. Perhaps that is the secret to her success!

Rounding out her series of very enjoyable tales is the one about her father and the possums, something we can all relate to either doing or being involved in something similar and if we can’t, perhaps it should be added to the ‘to do’ list of life.

Billed as a collection of cautionary tales, Bridges Burning and other hobbies is certainly that, but it is also a slightly wry look at life, people, herself and the world that surrounds us; all the many things that go into the making of a very talented and much loved comedienne.

  • WELCOME TO DADSVILLE Dad Jokes For Big Kids

WELCOME TO DADSVILLE Dad Jokes For Big Kids

We have all seen it coming! That joke, that dreadful moment when Dad or for that matter someone else simply has to tell a joke that sends some in paroxysms of laughter and rest of us into a series of groans and embarrassment; Sound familiar, I should think so!

Well known DJ Pete Graham delights in creating some seriously ‘groaning’ jokes, on the basis that whatever it is that makes you laugh, or groan, it will bring a little levity to your day and smile to your dial, as you relish, store for another occasion, or duck his daily offering of a slice of ‘Dadsville’.

Before you start on this ‘informative’ collection, do understand the jokes are for ‘BIG’ kids, as in grown-up’s, who love a little ‘corn’ in their daily diet. As he posts a fresh joke from Dadsville daily there have been many pieces to choose from, and the five chapters, yes indeed, five chapters, offers much merriment and so very many more ‘Duh’, moments.

Beginning with Dadsville City Liimits, which does show the age, which therefor gives him the cred’s to be able to say and offer these jokes, he moves on to A Wise Dad, of course, followed by  The Kids Up The Road, which offers a wealth of material.  The Dadsville Pub, come next, where of course the world is scrutinised, sorted and lampooned, often all at the same time and also offers a vast reservoir of wonderful jokes to be had, finishing with of course, Oh Dad!

Like many jokes, couched within each one is a little dose of truth, which inspires and allows us to take a good, long and often overdue, laugh at ourselves. It is funny, non-critical, and non-judgemental, but so very often right on target.

Welcome to Dadsville is a book which should be kept hidden away and brought out on those wonderful family and friends gathering, when a good laugh is recommended or alternatively, you simply want them all to go home!

Grab a copy and treat yourself to a jolly good laugh! You will feel better for the experience.
